02 · THE TRAINING

First the foundation.
Then the hands.

ESSENTIALS ONLINE FOUNDATION

1.

Essentials explores what lies beneath technique: the quality of presence from which touch begins. Drawing on Japanese perspectives, it considers how attention, respect, timing, space, responsibility and care shape the guest’s experience. Rather than presenting these as abstract philosophy or beliefs to adopt, Essentials translates them into practical choices you can bring into your own work.

Before practical training, you will complete Essentials online at your own pace and submit a short written reflection. This connects the learning to your own work, helps Keiko tailor the training, and preserves our time together for observation, practice, adjustment and direct feedback. An illustrated A4 Essentials manual is included as a downloadable PDF.

2.

PRIVATE HANDS-ON TRAINING

Bring the foundation into practice.

Practical training brings the principles explored in Essentials into touch, movement, water and treatment flow. You will observe, practise and repeat each element with close guidance and direct feedback, then connect the individual elements into a complete and coherent client journey.

03 · THE PERSON SHARING THE WORK

Keiko 'K’ Murphy

Owner & Practitioner at K’s Japanese Head Spa

Born and raised in Tokyo, K has lived in Cairns since 1993. Before opening K’s, she spent many years connecting Cairns and Japan through publishing, media coordination, events, design, retail and tours.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, her long-held wish to share something meaningful from Japan in Australia became one of the reasons she created K’s Japanese Head Spa. Her own experience of receiving gentle touch to the head during a difficult period also shaped the direction of her work.

Her continuing practice and study of tea ceremony, Koshintō and iaidō deepen her understanding of Japanese aesthetics, presence and discipline.

Since opening in 2021, K’s has grown almost entirely through word of mouth. Without paid advertising, appointments are frequently booked well in advance and the salon maintains an ongoing cancellation waitlist.

Through the Academy, K shares this work privately—keeping the learning close, responsive and grounded in each practitioner’s own setting.

04 · FAQ

Questions before you begin

A deposit is required to secure your training dates, with the remaining balance payable in up to two instalments.

The full course fee must be paid before practical training begins. Your payment schedule will be confirmed in writing before booking.

No ongoing step-by-step video library is provided.

The details of touch, pressure, rhythm and positioning are taught in person, where they can be observed and adjusted directly. You may record selected demonstrations on your own device with prior permission for personal study.

An illustrated Essentials manual and written treatment flow are included.

For one-to-one training, a suitable model may be required for selected basin work and complete treatment practice. You are welcome to nominate a friend, and there is no additional fee for the model.

The model attends only during the agreed practice times and does not participate as a learner or observer. As this is supervised training, the treatment may be paused, repeated or adjusted.

Model requirements and timing will be confirmed before training. For two-learner bookings, participants will generally practise on one another, so an additional model is usually not required.

No equipment or product package is attached to the course.

When training at K’s, you will use the salon’s equipment and products during practical sessions. When training at your salon, we will review and work with your existing set-up.

Any equipment or products you choose to purchase for your own practice are additional to the course fee.

No. This is private professional education and is not a nationally recognised qualification.

A certificate of completion is provided after the required online and practical components have been completed. It records the training undertaken but does not replace professional licensing, insurance or local regulatory requirements.
